Significance and importance of Tulsi Vivah

This festival reminds us of the ceremonial wedding of lord Vishnu with the Tulsi plant (basil plant), which is usually viewed as resembling the goddess Laxmi (goddess of wealth and prosperity). This festival is celebrated on the day of the lunar cycle (Moon transit or Chandra Gochar) or Dwadashi during Shukla Paksha within the Kartik month. The ceremony is celebrated during Prabodhini Ekadashi and Kartik Purnima. Women who are already married celebrate Tulsi marriage to urge blessings to bring happiness to their wedding life while unmarried women celebrate it to get a more desirable partner.

Story behind Tulsi Vivah

There’s a tale which is associated with Lord Vishnu and it gave birth to the Tulsi Vivah festival (basil wedding).

It is said that there was a monster king named Jalandhar who was notorious for his evil acts, However, the covert behind his great success was Pativrata Dharma (loyalty towards his partner) or the character of his wife Vrinda. Vrinda was so devoted towards her husband that her faithfulness made her husband almost inevitable. She attained these spiritual powers because of her loyalty and from worshipping Lord Vishnu.

She was a strong believer and devotee of Lord Vishnu and prayed endlessly for the wellbeing of her husband.

To obstruct evil acts and power of Jalandhar, Vishnu decided to dissolve the fondness of Vrinda, and he did so by taking the shape of Jalandhar and touching Vrinda. Jalandhar at concurrent time was fighting vigorously against the Devtas (gods), but as Vrinda’s Sattva (Pativrata) was destroyed at concurrent moment Jalandhar got killed. At the concurrent moment, Jalandhar's head fell into her lawn.

Vrinda after viewing this became furious and ached to acknowledge who killed her husband and therefore the reason behind his death. As she came to acknowledge what exactly happened and also came to acknowledge that it absolutely was Lord Vishnu who was standing right before of her she cursed Lord Vishnu, She said that he will become a Shaligram rock and saying 'Just as you've tricked me for killing my husband with deceit, in the identical way, your wife will be Deceptive and you'll also burn with the suffering of separation of your wife and you'll take  birth in the human world (also known as death world)' saying this, Vrinda became Sati together with her husband. Therefore, because of the curse of Vrinda, Lord Shri Ram was born in Ayodhya and he had to suffer Sita's separation.

As Lord, Vishnu was cursed by Vrinda, and as she was his true follower and worshiper Lord Vishnu accepted her curse and eventually became a Shaligram rock. Everyone was horrified including the God's and Devtas (who belong to the god's land Swarg) because the entire universe became unstable because Lord Vishnu regarded as the ultimate guardian of the universe and he was now within the dimensions of a rock, all Devtas alongside goddess Laxmi prayed Vrinda revoke his curse back, where Vridha was turned to ashes and therefore the Tulsi (basil) plant grew.

Lord Vishnu at this point told Vrinda that she loved him comparatively more than the goddess Laxmi while following the Sattva (Pativrata) and because of this he was happy from her sacrifice and said that she is going to always stay next to him as a Tulsi plant and since then each year during the month of Dev-Uthaavanee Ekadashi's day is recognized by the day of Tulsi Vivah, and anyone who worships Shaligram avatar Lord Vishnu gets immense fame within this world and beyond.

The Tulsi plant is considered as one of the forms of goddess laxmi, and Vrinda is one among her incarnations. Within the next life, on the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu married Tulsi in Shaligram form. Thus, the Tulsi marriage ceremony entails the wedding of a Shaligram stone from a Tulsi plant.

 Tulsi Vivah Celebration process

Tulsi Vivah will be celebrated either inside a temple or either at the home. Usually either Tulsi Vivah or a fast is performed until the evening. The festival is widely known and begins with giving a shower to the idol of Lord Vishnu and also the Tulsi plant (basil plant), the idol is decorated with garlands. Tulsi plant is decorated with a red colour sari, jewellery and bindi similar to a bride. Lord Vishu's idol is draped with dhoti.  Knot to unite the pair is tied using a thread.

The festival ends by applying the Sindoor on the idol of the Lord Vishnu and the Tulsi plant (basil) followed with sprinkling rice by the participating people in the auspicious tulsi Vivah followed by distributing Prashad (usually sweets and fruits or special desserts prepared which are first offered to the deity and later to the people participating in religious ceremony of tulsi vivah).
