mahavir jayanti 2022

History behind mahavir jayanti

For Jains, Mahavir Jayanti is the most auspicious day. The Jain community commemorates the last spiritual teacher of Jainism on this day all throughout the world. According to the Gregorian calendar, it occurs in March or April. It's also the 13th day of the Hindu calendar's Chaitra month.

Jainism is said to have been founded by Lord Mahavir. He was born on the 13th day of the brilliant half of the moon, in the month of Chaitra, in the year 599 BC in Kshatriyakund, Bihar. He was the Tirthankar's 24th and final incarnation (teaching god who preaches dharma).

Mahavir was born to King Siddartha and Queen Trisala, and his parents named him Vardhaman. He was born into a royal family, but he despised royalty and the high life. He was always looking for inner serenity and spirituality.

Vardhaman took a profound interest in the essential beliefs of Jainism in his early years and began meditating. He left the throne and his family at the age of 30 in order to discover spiritual truth. Before reaching 'Kevala Jnana,' or omniscience, he lived as an ascetic for more than twelve years, practising rigorous penance and great discipline.

Why mahavir jayanti is celebrated

Lord Mahavira was born on the 13th day of the waxing moon in the Chaitra month (Hindu calendar) in Kundalagrama (now Kundalpur) in Bihar, a few kilometres from Patna, according to Jain texts and religious scripts. Vaishali was the state capital at the time. The year Mahavira was born, however, is a point of contention. Mahavira was born in 599 BC according to Swetambar Jains, and 615 BC according to Digambar Jains. His parents, King Siddhartha and Queen Trisala, gave him the name Vardhaman. Mahavira's mother had 14 dreams, which were later analysed by astrologers, who all predicted that Mahavira would become an emperor or a sage, according to the Swetambar community's beliefs (Tirthankara). Mahavira left his throne and family when he was 30 years old in search of the truth. He lived as an ascetic in exile for 12 years. He advocated nonviolence and treated everyone with respect during this time. After demonstrating great abilities in managing the senses, he was given the name "Mahavira." It is popularly believed that Mahavira reached enlightenment at the age of 72. (Nirvana).

Every year, Mahavir Jayanti is commemorated to honour his preaching and Jain philosophy.

Mythological significance of mahavir jayanti 2022

Because Lord Mahavir was born on this day, Mahavir Jayanti is regarded as very important and significant. Mahavir Jayanti is a celebration marked by fervour, devotion, and fasting. The holiday is well-known in Bihar, India's easternmost state, where Mahavira was born on this day. Calcutta's Parasnath temple hosts a big celebration. In addition, the day is commemorated in all Jain temples across India. On this day, devotees also fast to seek the Lord Mahavir's blessings. It is also considered auspicious to donate on this day.

The five major vows are at the heart of Jains' righteous behaviour:

·  Nonviolence (Ahimsa) entails not harming any living creature.

·  Satya (honesty) - to communicate only the truth that isn't harmful.

·  Non-stealing (Asteya) entails refusing to take anything that has not been properly granted.

·  Chastity (Brahmacharya) entails refraining from sensual pleasures.

·      Non-possession/non-attachment (Aparigraha) entails full separation from people, places, and things.

Mahavir made religion simple and natural, devoid of complicated rituals. His teachings mirrored the soul's inner beauty and harmony. Mahavir preached the idea of human life's superiority and emphasised the significance of a positive outlook on life. Mahavir's nonviolence (Ahimsa), truth (Satya), non-stealing (Achaurya), celibacy (Brahma-charya), and non-possession (Aparigraha) messages are filled with universal compassion. "A living body is not only an integration of limbs and flesh," Mahavir explained, "but it is the abode of the soul, capable of perfect perception (Anant-darshana), perfect knowledge (Anant-jnana), perfect strength (Anant-virya), and perfect pleasure" (Anant-sukha). Mahavir's teaching portrays the living being's independence and spiritual bliss.

Mahavir emphasised that all living beings are equal, regardless of their size, shape, or form, or their spiritual development or lack thereof, and that we should love and respect them. He proclaimed the message of global love in this manner. Mahavir rejected the idea of God as the universe's creator, defender, and destroyer. He also condemned the worship of gods and goddesses for the purpose of gaining financial wealth and personal gain.
