Sharad Purnima is a Hindu festival that occurs on the ‘purnima' (full moon day) in the month of ‘Ashwin' in the Hindu calendar. In the English calendar, this holiday occurs in the months of September and October. "Navanna Purnima," "Kaumudi Puja," "Kumar Purnima," and "Kojagiri Purnima" are some of the other names for Sharad Purnima.

2021 Sharad Purnima

Sharad Purnima is one of Hindu Calendar's most well-known Purnima(s). Sharad Purnima is thought to be the only day of the year when the moon appears with all the sixteen Kalas (s). Each human trait is associated with a certain Kala in Hinduism, and it is claimed that a complete human personality is created by combining sixteen different Kala(s). Lord Krishna was the entire incarnation of Lord Vishnu, having been born with all sixteen Kala(s). Lord Rama had only twelve Kala when he was born (s).

Rice-Kheer, which is thought to be energised and reinforced by moonlight, is consumed and distributed as Prasad among family members in the morning.

Raas Purnima is another name for Sharad Purnima (in the Brij area). Lord Krishna is said to have performed Maha-Raas, the holy love dance, on the day of Sharad Purnima. Hearing the beautiful song of Krishna's flute on the night of Sharad Purnima, the Gopis of Vrindavan snuck away from their homes and families to the forest to dance with Krishna all night. It was on this day that Lord Krishna created a number of Krishnas to follow each of the Gopis. Lord Krishna is claimed to have supernaturally lengthened the night to the length of Lord Brahma's one night, which was billions of human years.

When Kojagara Vrat is performed for the entire day, Sharad Purnima is known as Kojagara Purnima in various locations. Kaumudi Vrat (कौमुदी व्रत) is another name for Kojagara Vrat.
